It has been said that God is very “angry” in the Old Testament. After all, God destroyed the entire earth with the exception of Noah, some of his family, and the animals on the ark (Genesis7:21-23)
All the living things on earth died—birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people. Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died. God wiped out every living thing on the earth—people, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and the birds of the sky. All were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat.
Lets take a look at the first humans, Adam and Eve. After they had disobeyed God they were sent out of the garden of Eden in Genesis 3:23
So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
If God was mad at them, I would think he would have abandoned them but God still walked and talked with them. We see this throughout Genesis. Here is one example in Genesis 4:6.
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
It does not appear from this that God is angry with us but in Isaiah 43:15 the Bible says,
"I am the LORD, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King."
God is Holy and in Habakkuk 1:13 it says,
Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor Why do You look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they?
So God is Holy and he Hates sin. This is quite a dilemma because every human is a sinner according to Romans 3:23.
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.
If God was mad at us, I would think he would just leave us to our doom. Romans 6:23 says,
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
How amazing is this! John 3:16 says,
"For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 says,
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
This definitely doesn’t sound like God is mad at us. This doesn’t mean that we can do whatever we want and be saved. The plan of salvation is plainly laid out. Romans 10:9 says
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
You have to answer the call though. Revelation 3:20 says,
"Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
Ok, I know what you are thinking. If God isn’t mad at us, why do bad things and hardships come my way? Matthew 5:45 says,
In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.
This is saying that good happens to the “good” and “bad” people as well as bad happens to the “good” and “bad” people. We live in a world that has sin in it, so there will always be trials we have to go through until we reach heaven. John16:33 gives a bit of encouragement when it says:
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus, I want you to know that God is NOT mad at you. He loves you and he sent his only son to die as payment for your sins. If you would like to learn more about having a relationship with Jesus check out my “What must I do to be saved?” section.
