Up In the Club

Would God have a problem with believers going to clubs and partying, even if they wouldn't do what everyone else is doing?

I definitely don't want to be legalistic. The bible doesn't specifically talk about going to the club nor is the bible intended to be a book of rules. The bible does however say in Colossians 3:17,

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

and also in Colossians 3:23,

"Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

As Christians we are always on display. Romans 14:13 says,

"Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother."

If you go to the club, and you know you are not dancing or singing vulgar or getting wasted, but there is a weaker brother or sister who sees or hears about it, it may be a hinderance to their walk. Maybe you are going to the club to support your friend or you are just tagging along, but you are not doing what everyone else is doing, I think there are better ways to support your friends and other activities you could do together that will not run the risk of being a stumbling block to them.

Now, I'm not going to act like I've never been to the club before, because I have. A few activities that I partook in included but not limited to drinking, singing, and dancing.

The bible doesn't condemn drinking in itself, but it does say "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery..." (Ephesians 3:23). Debauchery aka "drunk texts", aka "one-night-stands" aka "he/she looked a whole lot better yesterday" aka "what was I thinking?!"

The bible mentions singing usually as an act of worship.

"...singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart," (Ephesians 5:19)

You have to ask yourself, "who am I worshiping with the songs that I am singing?"

The bible also doesn't condemn dancing. The bible does talk about certain situations where dancing ends in nakedness. Dancing definitely can have sexual connotations and innuendos that go along with it (whinin' and grindin'), but there are definitely types of dancing that could be considered modest. In fact, that bible mentions times that dancing is used as worship.

I think it really comes down to "can these activities be done in the name of Jesus or to glorify Jesus?" I personally think that it would be pretty difficult to do these things in a way that glorify God when you are at the club.

Ultimately, I think we have to use wisdom and discernment. Romans 14:22 says

"You may believe there's nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don't feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right."

This means that we have to use the knowledge that we have (a little of which I just shared with you), and use your own convictions. Ultimately, your walk is between you and God. This doesn't mean that we can't use wisdom and the bible, but if you have meditated on the word and prayed to God for wisdom, you have to follow your convictions as mentioned in Romans 14:22.

Daily Bible Verse

If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Chorinthians 13:1-3
